Extend the battery life of your laptop

Mar 11, 2008 1 Comment »

The laptop is after all to be moved around. There are many places where you cannot connect your laptop to the power and you have to run it on battery. You run the risk of running out of the laptop battery charge if you don’t take measures to preserve the battery life.

First of all, dim your laptop screen as much as possible. I’m not suggesting that you dim it so much that you go blind after a few days, but since the laptop screen is the biggest hogger of your battery, keeping it less bright sustains your battery life.

After this, check if some things are running needlessly and stop them. It could be a program using system resources or some hardware that could be allowed to run when there is enough power.

Of course the best way to prolong the battery of your laptop is not using your laptop.

Is your laptop overheating?

Mar 10, 2008 2 Comments »

Laptops overheat very fast due to confined space and lack of proper ventilation. The hardware of your laptop is such that it often generates lots of heat and this heat has to escape from your ventilators. If you feel that you laptop is very hot or your laptop fan has to work overtime to keep it cool then perhaps it is high time you checked if your ventilation is clear.

It is very easy to locate on your laptop from where the hot air exits your laptop. Check if there is lots of dust there. Clean the dust with a cloth or keyboard cleaner; it should be easy to clean the dust. If you are not averse to the idea of opening up your laptop you can easily remove the case and clean the ventilation from inside but then this may become an adventurous task if you cannot make out how to put things back.

Just as the air goes out it also comes in from somewhere; find that place — it is often termed as inhalation vent. Cover it with a thin cloth to prevent future dust buildup.

If this doesn’t stop your laptop from being overheated then you should probably restore the BIOS setting because it is a your BIOS setting that efficiently manages the hardware resources. You can probably get the BIOS file from your vendor.

MacBook Air

MacBook Air

MacBook Air

The new MacBook Air from Apple is so thin that it fits in a manila envelop. Apple calls it MacBook Air "the world’s thinnest notebook".

MacBook Air features an optional solid-state hard drive and Apple has incorporated the iPhone interface into MacBook Air. It weighs 3.0 pounds (1.36 kg) and is 0.76 inches (1.93 cm) thick at its thickest point and 0.16 inches (0.4 cm) at its thinnest, making it the thinnest notebook currently in production.

The MacBook Air features a 1.8-inch hard disk drive — a Parallel ATA (PATA) model that operates at 4200 RPM — has a storate capacity of 80GB standard. A 64GB solid-state disk (SSD) drive comes as is an option. MacBook Air comes with a sleek keyboard with crisp keys, just like the MacBook.

With a silvery finish it sports a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The backlighting is supposed to save power and provide "instant on" response from the moment you turn it on. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile. It sports an iPhone like interface and hence an oversize multi-touch trackpad.

According to this post, "the first thing i noticed about MacBook Air is the processor i.e 2.0 Ghz, that is fine but not very much impressive for me. Another thing in the Hard drive which comes in standard 80 GB which is NOT ENOUGH! It must have been 300 GB to put everything. Another thing are the port. It comes with only 1 USB 2.0 port, headphone jack and a micro-DVI port, thats it. A single USB port is a big turn off for me. And now the Big things you havent noticed! It does not comes with a DVD or CD Readers/Writters. Weird eh?! Dont worry, Apple supplies you a portable DVD drive for this purpose to which you can plug in USB port and use it. Also this DVD drive does not work with any other PC, pretty interesting thing for me =D".
